Viaplay has announced its plan to enter the European market. We have examined the streaming service in more detail.

The Scandinavian streaming service Viaplay is expanding soon to the Netherlands, Great Britain, Canada, Switzerland, Austria and Germany. A precise launch date for this has not yet been announced, but Dutch viewers will be able to access the portal beginning in 2022 and by the second half of 2022 Britain will join the list.

In 2023, Viaplay likely will takeover the four other markets. So far, Viaplay only has viewers in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia and Ukraine. In addition to that, Viaplay also serves the public in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Iceland.

In 2011, the company Viaplay was founded with its headquarters in Stockholm. It offers monthly subscriptions with child- oriented programming and Hollywood blockbuster movies. However, now there are many services that offer this choice, so Viacom has to compete with them.

Viaplay concentrates its efforts principally on high-quality Nordic films, which also achieve international success from time to time. A considerable portion of these productions are originals that are mainly produced in the countries that Viaplay is available in, namely Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland.

When a user downloads a movie onto their laptop, PC, tablet, smartphone or console, they are allowed to watch it for thirty days after downloading it; once they start watching the movie, they must finish it within the next 48 hours. This service does not require an active subscription.

The streaming service belongs to the Nordic Entertainment Group (Nent-Group), which also operates a satellite platform and offers both its own channels as well as those of third parties. The Nent-Group has restructured its studio operation recently and has renamed it Viaplay Studios. Among other things, the group led the production companies Brain Academy and Nice Drama together.

Some of the films in this group include well-known titles such as "Midnight Sun", "The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared", "The Perfect Patient" or the Swedish series, "Max Anger - With One Eye Open". Original production in this group includes the film, "Hilma" directed by three-time Oscar nominee Lasse Hallström and the series, "The Box" written and produced by Adi Hasak.

It is not yet clear how much Viaplay will cost in Germany or the other European countries, since various deals and cooperation with existing pay TV and streaming providers may take place.
