Stadium Reims

The Reims side played a prominent role in France for many years, winning six league titles and two cups between 1949 and 1962. Often referred to as "the golden era of football", the France team of the 1950s and 1960s was the epitome of style. They were known for their attacking game - foot pétillant or "splashy" as they liked it! The players of this squad helped France win the World Cup for the first time in 58 years when they finished third at the time, before making history across Europe with various teams such as PSG (Posterboy Girondins).

This team never reached its peak. In fact, this club has one of the most successful histories in European football with two Champions Cup finals and more wins than losses against Real Madrid (3-4 in 1956; 0-2 in 1959). They have also won the French Premier League title three times! But since bankruptcy in 1991/92 things have looked bleak for Montpellier Football Club - the men's team had to start in a lower league after being promoted and now rarely makes sporting headlines. In 1970, landslides destroyed parts of the beautiful Trophée des As stadium complex built for the 2011 FIFA World Cup.

The team, which has always had the ambition and will to be among the best in Europe, is now just one climb away from realisation. The long-awaited return to Ligue 1 will finally happen next season after a fifty-six year absence!
